Big Sleeps’ journey is a testament to resilience and transformation, rooted in his experiences with 1990s Los Angeles gang culture. During a time of violence and confinement, he wrote letters that marked gang territory, not knowing that this practice would evolve into a profound artistic path. His lettering was raw and unrefined, a reflection of the life he was entrenched in, and a form of expression that eventually offered him an unexpected route to change.
Over time, Big Sleeps refined his style, finding himself at a pivotal moment where he had to choose between the life he knew and a new path. He opted for redemption, harnessing the lettering he once used in gang life to inspire others. By channeling his past into art, Big Sleeps now influences a generation of artists, reshaping his narrative from one of struggle to one of hope.
His work, characterized by intricate letterforms, has gained recognition as fine art. Though some of his styles appear as complex, almost hieroglyphic compositions, they communicate a depth and intensity that simple fonts cannot convey.
